Start the Small but Regular in Shawwal to Sustain HHUGS

£4,139 raised of £50,000 target

Whilst our beloved guest of Ramadhan has sadly departed, it doesn’t have to mean saying goodbye to the good habits we formed in the blessed month.

The Sahaba (ra) were more concerned about the acceptance of their deeds, than the deed itself. Indeed, the sign that our worship in Ramadhan has been accepted is to remain steadfast in performing those deeds after the month has ended. The true meaning of Eid is not lavish gifts or gourmet meals - it’s to increase our ibaadah, in gratitude to Him:

"Every day a person spends in the obedience of his Mawla, having thanked and remembered Him, is a day of Eid for him." (al-Hasan al-Basri)

With the current cost of living crisis and almost 50% of Muslims in the UK trapped in poverty, our beneficiaries have endured a challenging time and have been left even more vulnerable. Families who were already in financial difficulty, now find themselves pushed to the brink. With job losses, inflation meaning food prices are up by 3.5% and energy costs by 54%, families are under severe pressure. They are often challenged with debt as single mothers struggle to support their family without their husbands. Without HHUGS, these families would be unable to pay their rent, struggle to feed and clothe their children and spiral deeper into debt.

"I pray to Allah that everyone at HHUGS and everyone that is donating enters Jannah without reckoning. Only earlier I was saying to someone, 'I spent my last £15 today. Two-thirds of my children are with me during the lock down and they are fasting, what will I do the next few days?' The person said, 'Don’t worry, Allah provides,' and I just put the phone down and received your message with the vouchers. Subhan Allah.”

But to continue our services, our families need your ongoing support.

To sustain our families we need 1500 donors to give £1.17 a day. That’s less than your daily coffee fix. Just £35 a month to ensure we can deliver the practical, financial and emotional support they require long term.

Ramadhan may have passed, but the opportunities to serve and to give sadaqah remain open.

We have no guarantee that we will live to see another Ramadhan. As we’re surrounded by constant reminders of the fragility of our lives, seize the opportunities to give before it’s too late.

“Give out of what We have provided for you, before death comes to one of you and he says, ‘My Lord, if You would only reprieve me for a little while, I would give in charity and become one of the righteous.’” (63:10)

Other ways you can make this an extraordinary Shawwal.
A penny doesn't sound like much. It may seem quite insignificant as it sits in your purse or wallet, but over time a few pennies can add up to make a difference to some of the nation's most ostracised and forgotten families who risk being overlooked and left even more vulnerable at this testing time.

A Penny Box is a simple way to fundraise for HHUGS and a great opportunity for your friends and family to contribute.

Set a good example by teaching your children the importance of charity and caring for their neighbours, with your very own sadaqah jar!

When the lockdown is lifted, you will have the chance to place your penny box in your workplace or a local business. By displaying a Penny Box, you will be helping to raise awareness of HHUGS at the same time.

Make your pennies count today!

Another great way to continue doing good is to give up some of your time to help those in need. We are in need of HHUGS heroes to help bring light to households next door in despair: single mothers, unable to feed their children, dealing with financial instability; elderly parents left isolated. More so than ever before, they worry about the uncertainty they face.

Shawwal is a great time to start a good habit. Some of the benefits of volunteering are:
• Earn the pleasure of Allah with the right intention
• Be there for families and individuals whose needs are often ignored and forgotten
• Build confidence
• Learn new skills that could enhance your career
• Give back to your neighbours

“Whoever among you is able to benefit his brother, let him do so.” (Muslim)

Volunteer as a HHUGS Hero to relieve the distress of our neighbours.
"The most beloved of people are those who bring most benefit." (at-Tabarani)

“Whoever fasts Ramadan then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted for a lifetime.” (Ibn Majah)
