VOLUNTEERS PLAY A BIG PART IN MAKING THINGS HAPPEN

At HHUGS, volunteering is a powerful way to contribute directly to our mission of supporting families under great stress. Whether you have specific skills or just a willingness to help, there are many opportunities for you to be involved.

Explore our volunteer application to sign up or read inspiring stories from those who have already made an impact. Your commitment, no matter how small, makes a lasting difference.

🌱 Volunteer with HHUGS

At HHUGS, volunteers are at the heart of everything we do.
By giving your time, skills, or voice, you help us build supportive spaces that care for mental health, connection, and community.

Whether you’re new to volunteering or have years of experience, there’s a place for you at HHUGS.

💚 Why Volunteer with HHUGS?

Volunteering with HHUGS means:

  • Supporting mental health and wellbeing in the community
  • Being part of a compassionate, values-led organisation
  • Gaining experience, confidence, and new skills
  • Making a real difference through small, meaningful actions

We value kindness, reliability, and a willingness to learn — you don’t need to have everything figured out.

Types of Volunteering at HHUGS

At HHUGS, volunteers support our work in two main ways.
Whether you enjoy helping behind the scenes or supporting individuals directly, there is a role to suit you.

Beneficiary Support Volunteering

Beneficiary Support volunteers help us provide practical, emotional, and social support to individuals and families supported by HHUGS.

These roles are people-focused and may involve working directly with beneficiaries in a safe, supported, and supervised way.

Examples of Beneficiary Support roles include:

  • Keyworker
Support beneficiaries by offering a listening ear and helping them feel emotionally and socially supported.
  • Youth Mentor (minimum 12-month commitment, approx. 2 hours per week)
Support a young person through positive mentoring, encouragement, and being a consistent, trusted role model.
  • General Driver
Help by delivering Qurbani meat, gifts, or essential items to families on behalf of HHUGS.
  • Prison Visit Driver (ad hoc)
Support families by helping with transport arrangements for prison visits when needed.

You don’t need to be an expert – we value
kindness, reliability, and a willingness to support others.
Training and guidance are provided where needed.

Please note: some Beneficiary Support roles may require additional checks or a longer-term commitment.

Fundraising, Marketing & PR Volunteering

Fundraising and Promotion volunteers help us raise awareness, funds, and community support so our services can continue.

These roles are flexible and ideal for people who want to get involved without direct beneficiary support.

Examples include:

  • Fundraising (Online)
Support HHUGS by helping with raising awareness and online fundraising campaigns, sharing donation appeals, our social media posts/alerts and campaigns.
  • Office Volunteer (Brixton, London)
Provide practical support with admin and day-to-day tasks at the HHUGS office.
  • Leaflet Distribution
Help spread the word about HHUGS by handing out leaflets at approved locations or events.
  • Event Volunteer
Support HHUGS at events and collections, including stalls, mosques, and indoor or outdoor activities.

These roles are suitable for
first-time volunteers, students, and those with limited availability.

* Training or guidance will be provided where needed, and our team will discuss next steps with you after you apply.*

Reference (Youth & First-Time Volunteers)

We understand that this may be your first time volunteering. To help us get to know you, we ask for one simple reference.

A reference is just someone who knows you and can say a few words about your character and reliability.

This could be a:

  • Teacher or tutor
  • Imam or mosque youth leader
  • Employer or supervisor
  • Community member or mentor

Your referee should not be a family member
.

Parent / Guardian Note (For Volunteers Under 18)

If you are under 18, a parent or guardian may be listed as a secondary contact, but not as the referee.

HHUGS may contact a parent or guardian if needed to support communication or consent for volunteering activities.

If you’re not sure who to list, that’s okay. You can still apply, our team is happy to help you.

Why We Ask for References

We keep our reference process simple and proportionate. For fundraising, promotion, and events roles, references help us ensure volunteers are reliable, respectful, and aligned with HHUGS values.

Volunteers aged 16-17 may volunteer independently. However, HHUGS may request parent or guardian contact details for safeguarding and communication purposes.
