Brother D’s Story
“One day I was working, writing, planning. The next, everything was gone – my equipment, my income, my stability.”
Brother D is a British Muslim man in his late 50s. A writer by background, he has spent years speaking publicly about issues he cares deeply about. In 2024, his life changed abruptly following his arrest in connection with online political expression.
He is now navigating a long and uncertain legal process – while living on almost no income and managing a history of depression.
A Sudden Arrest
For many years, Brother D had been vocal in his support for Palestine, mainly through writing and online commentary. In mid-2024, he was arrested following online posts expressing his views.
He was later charged under counter-terrorism legislation in relation to an alleged post. He does not know which specific post led to the charge. The evidence presented to him included hundreds of pages of material drawn from multiple online accounts.
He now faces a prolonged legal process involving repeated court appearances and preliminary hearings, with a jury trial not expected until the following year. The uncertainty – not knowing how long this will continue or what the outcome may be – has become a constant source of strain.
A specialist advocacy organisation is supporting him legally, but the process is slow and emotionally draining.
Livelihood Lost Overnight
When he was arrested, police confiscated his laptop, hard drives, USBs and other electronic equipment – the essential tools he relied on for freelance writing work.
His income, which had always fluctuated, effectively collapsed overnight. Without access to his work or archived material, he was unable to continue projects or secure new ones. At times, his bank balance has dropped to just a few pounds.
Although he may be eligible for certain benefits, he has struggled to navigate applications due to his irregular work history and concerns about complications while his case is ongoing.
Currently, he survives on roughly £100 per month from very limited sources. Friends lend small amounts to help him get through. His partner, who receives benefits, is also under financial strain.
Even the cost of travelling to court hearings has become a serious worry. He has described fearing that a lack of money could prevent him from attending essential appearances – something that would carry serious consequences.
Living Under Prolonged Stress
Brother D has a history of depression and has previously been hospitalised. The arrest, loss of work, confiscation of personal belongings and drawn-out legal uncertainty have significantly affected his mental health.
He describes living in a near-constant state of anxiety:
- Worrying about upcoming hearings
- Fearing further legal action
- Struggling with the humiliation of relying on friends to survive
- Facing ongoing financial insecurity
Outwardly, he is articulate and educated – someone who has worked professionally for years. Yet behind closed doors, he is living in hidden poverty.
He has found some comfort in community spaces, such as informal support groups and coffee mornings. However, formal therapy is not currently accessible to him.
At the same time, he is navigating new parenthood – caring for a newborn while under extraordinary stress.

Holding On
Brother D’s story is one of sudden change and prolonged uncertainty. A man who once sustained himself through writing now finds himself dependent on small acts of support and solidarity.
He speaks quietly about the shock of how quickly life shifted – from professional independence to living on almost nothing. He describes the loss of dignity that comes with asking friends for help, and the fear of what lies ahead.
For him, the support he has received has not removed the uncertainty. But it has provided stability at a moment when everything else feels fragile – support given without judgment, allowing him to maintain basic dignity while facing an uncertain future.
