Purpose of the role
To develop, implement and oversee HHUGS’ fundraising and marketing strategy so that the charity can continue to relieve hardship, restore hope and rebuild lives. The role will provide leadership to a small fundraising team, diversify income streams and ensure that HHUGS’ messaging remains consistent with its mission and Islamic ethos.

Strategy & leadership
- Develop, deliver and periodically review HHUGS’ fundraising and marketing strategy, ensuring it aligns with the charity’s mission to support families affected by counter-terror measures.
- Set annual income targets and create multi-year plans to grow income through regular giving, high-value donors, trusts, grants, corporate partnerships, legacy giving and digital campaigns.
- Recruit, line-manage and develop staff within the fundraising and marketing function, including workforce planning, hiring, induction, performance management and regular 1:1s.
- Lead and motivate the fundraising team (staff and volunteers), setting clear objectives, supervising workloads and providing professional development.
Fundraising
- Identify and cultivate relationships with major donors, charitable trusts, statutory bodies and corporate partners whose objectives match HHUGS’ aims.
- Write compelling funding proposals and grant applications, ensuring compliance with Islamic giving principles (zakat, sadaqah) and UK charity regulations.
- Maintain and develop community fundraising by supporting mosques, schools and volunteers to run local events and seasonal campaigns (e.g., Ramadan, Qurbani).
- Oversee the management of HHUGS’ donor database/CRM to ensure accurate record-keeping, segmentation, timely acknowledgements and Gift Aid processing.
Marketing & communications
- Shape and implement a marketing plan to raise HHUGS’ profile among Muslim communities and the wider public.
- Coordinate production of marketing collateral (web, print, email, video, social media) ensuring messaging remains sensitive to beneficiaries’ circumstances and upholds Islamic values.
- Manage HHUGS’ presence on social-media platforms and email newsletters, analysing engagement metrics and refining content accordingly.
- Work with the Operations Director and casework team to source inspiring stories and testimonials (while protecting beneficiary confidentiality) and to ensure that fundraising appeals accurately reflect the charity’s impact.
Events & campaigns
- Plan and deliver fundraising campaigns and events (e.g., sponsored challenges, dinners, webinars, mosque collections) with clear targets, budgets and promotional plans.
- Liaise with volunteers and community organisers to maximise participation and ensure events are inclusive and aligned with HHUGS’ ethos.
Reporting & compliance
- Monitor income streams and expenditure, preparing regular financial and operational reports for the CEO, trustees and other stakeholders.
- Ensure all fundraising and marketing activities comply with relevant legislation (Fundraising Regulator, GDPR, Charity Commission),
- Islamic fundraising principles and HHUGS’ policies on safeguarding and data protection.
- Use an organisational operating system (e.g., EOS/Traction or similar) to run cadence meetings, maintain departmental scorecards/dashboards, and monitor delivery against agreed rocks/KPIs.
Networking & representation
- Act as an ambassador for HHUGS by building relationships with partners, attending conferences, media interviews and community events to promote the charity’s work.

Person specification
- Essential
- Experience – Demonstrable success (ideally 5 years+) in fundraising and income generation across multiple streams (major donors, trusts, community fundraising, digital campaigns); experience in strategic planning and budget management; track record of managing teams and delivering income targets.
- Marketing skills – Experience designing and implementing marketing campaigns (digital and traditional) and producing high-quality content; knowledge of branding, audience segmentation and analytics.
- Faith-sensitivity and values – Understanding of, and sympathy for, Islamic principles of charity (particularly zakat) and ability to engage effectively with Muslim communities.
- Communication – Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to inspire donors and volunteers and to translate complex issues into compelling messages.
- Leadership – Strong people-management skills with the ability to motivate staff and volunteers, set clear objectives and build an inclusive team culture.
- Organisational skills – Ability to prioritise workload, meet deadlines, manage multiple projects simultaneously and maintain meticulous records.
- IT proficiency – Competent user of CRM systems, email marketing software, social-media platforms and standard office applications.
Desirable
- Experience working within a Muslim charity or with Muslim beneficiaries.
- Knowledge of counter-terror laws and their impact on families, or experience supporting marginalised communities.
- Qualification in fundraising, marketing, communications or related field.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel occasionally for events.
