An Eid party is more than just a social gathering; it’s a reflection of the joy that comes from successfully completing a month of fasting and spiritual growth. That’s why we believe it’s important everyone gets to celebrate.
We threw Eid parties in London, Birmingham and Bradford for our families. Whilst their day may not be picture perfect, as they feel the absence of a loved one, we wanted to gift them an Eid party that uplifted them.
Every child deserves to remember Eid fondly. Memories of being the best dressed, indulging in sweet treats and sharing presents, surrounded by family and friends. But this reality is far from the Eid day our families remember.
These parties could only take place because of you. Whilst HHUGS staff plan and prepare these parties, we are only able to spark joy and to excite children due to your generosity, whilst we try our best to make sure it’s a day to remember, and an occasion that makes memories for the children for years to come.
That’s why it’s important for us to throw one that fills their faces with delight, and revives the sacred nature of Eid.
Here’s the turn out for each city:
- London – a total of 160 attendees: 53 women, 25 men and 82 children
- Bradford – a total of 75 attendees: 22 women 15 men and 38 children
- Birmingham – a total of 60 attendees: 27 women, 11 men and 22 children
Families share the impact it has, and how it makes them feel knowing that, despite being shunned from their local community, there are still people who care and think of them.
“We feel loved, valued and not forgotten. HHUGS gatherings are so special because they appreciate and support us for the very reasons we are apprehended, treated differently and shunned.”
“Alhamdulillah, it’s good for our wives and children to meet other sisters and families who had to suffer their own torture.”
“Me and my daughters felt very welcomed. It was very nice to see that we are not alone.”
“(It) made me feel better as I interacted with people in similar situations.”
There’s a common theme of isolation, of being grateful for merely having people around you. That’s something we take for granted. The simplicity of even having someone to talk to, to relate to and to confide in. Although we decorate our venues with Eid décor, and have entertainment for the children, the precious feeling of being around people who accept you and do not shun you seems to the main source of happiness.
Behind all the glitter and sparkles, an Eid party is thrown for people to connect. Your kindness allows people to feel heard, and human again. Their basic need to feel seen is met. It’s something that seems simple enough but revives a heart, and plants hope.
For our Birmingham Eid party, the families enjoyed delicious food, and there was henna, and arts and crafts for the children.
“The Eid party was awesome. It was lovely meeting other women.”
“It was a great gathering with my family. I felt extremely happy!”
Our Bradford Eid party was held at a play centre, where children could release their energy, whilst the parents could socialise.
“The play gym was a very good idea as children were busy playing and the ladies had time together.”
Our London party had delicious food, and a sports day themed activity for the children.
A seasoned volunteer who supported our London party shares her experience:
“When you walk into to the Eid party, it seems as though it’s just a group of people celebrating. You wouldn’t be able to tell the pain and trauma they carry – both the children and their parents. In that moment, there are smiles, laughter and excitement. It’s a beautiful moment to witness. To know your part of a day that will be remembered for months to come.”
