What is the Walking on Sunshine – Bradford Summer Challenge?

It is a stunning 3.5km Summer Walk in Bradford’s Lister Park to help HHUGS raise much needed funds to sustain their unique services.

Where is it taking place?

Lister Park is a gem in Bradford’s crown. In 2006 it was given the prestigious award of Britain’s Best Park, and was also nominated for Best Park in Europe. A large well-maintained park with good facilities, it boasts a wealth of beautiful and interesting features including Cartwright Hall which stands in the middle of the path, the boating lake, a large children’s play area, the Mughal water gardens to explore, the Botanical Garden and the Geological trail to name just a few. There are toilets and art galleries in Cartwright Hall with free admission and a small café on the edge of the boating Lake.

How do I get there?

By car

Lister Park is approximately 1 mile from Bradford City Centre on the A650 Keighley road. Vehicle access via North Park Road. There are car parking spaces on the main drive and disabled parking in the bowls pavilion car park and at the rear of Cartwright Hall. Free to use. The car park is open from 7am until dusk. The vehicle barrier is locked between 4pm & 6pm. Vehicles still in the park can leave via the one way flaps. Strictly no overnight parking. There is additional disabled parking for visitors to Cartwright Hall at the rear of the building.

By bus

Many bus routes travel along Manningham Lane/Keighley Road to Lister Park, including 680, 629, 737, 662. For bus timetable information contact Metro on 0113 2457676 or

Who can take part in Walking on Sunshine – Bradford Summer Walk?

Absolutely anyone who is fit and able to walk can participate. Participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by parent or guardian. The event is open to both individuals and groups, so please invite your friends, families, neighbours and colleagues to join you. If you're part of a Scout, youth group or school why not get your colleagues involved? As this is a mild walk, it is more than suitable for children and for pushchairs. However, if your child suffers from any health problems, please consult your doctor before you register for the walk.
A footpath surrounds the park which is accessible to all and suitable for the majority of manual and electric wheelchairs. There is level access from North Park Road and Emm Lane to the park. Wheelchair users may require assistance to access all areas.

How fit do I need to be?

You will be walking 5 miles around a public park for 2 - 3.5 hours. People of all fitness levels are welcome to the challenge, and hence why people are willing to sponsor you to do the walk. If you have any medical conditions, please consult your doctor before you register for the walk.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable footwear (walking boots or trainers are advisable). Check the weather forecast in the event of rain, in which case you’ll need to bring waterproofs, but we are hoping this will be a beautiful summer’s day!

How would I know what route to take? And what if I get lost?

Prior to the walk, we will have a group event briefing and you will receive a route map with details of what to do in the unlikely event of getting lost. There will also be HHUGS volunteers and qualified First Aid representatives to help you along your walk.

What should I bring with me?

Bring a water bottle, comfortable footwear and a fully charged mobile phone. The walk will be followed by a picnic so feel free to bring a dish or treat to share with everyone.

What do I do when I arrive at the event?

Upon arrival, you will need to register at the Registration Desk. There you will be issued with a map of the route and other items.

How much is the registration fee? Is there a deadline?

We ask each participant over 3 years to pay £5 non-refundable registration fee which must be paid for by Friday 11th August.

How much do I need to fundraise?

We ask all participants to fundraise an additional £50. We are confident however that with a little effort, participants can easily raise far more than the minimum target and hope they’ll be more ambitious and aim for £100 or £200!

Will there be an area to perform prayer?

Yes, we will set up a prayer area and ablution can be performed in the WC facilities in the park.

How do I fundraise?

There are many ways to fundraise and when you sign up, we will share our great ideas and we are always at hand to give you further support.
